When Trace began working as a material handler at the Goodwill Kentucky store in Harrodsburg, he didn’t know it would lead him to a career in the trades.

While working at Goodwill, Trace learned about the organization’s pre-apprenticeship program in construction through his career coach, Mary Beth. With previous experience remodeling houses, he was eager to expand his skills and explore new opportunities.

“I learned about all aspects of construction, how important it is, and everything that goes into it,” Trace said. “I got to figure out a career path through the program, and I got into the apprenticeship program at the union for plumbers and pipefitters.”

Now, Trace is in a five-year apprenticeship, working in housing mechanical systems while pursuing his journeyman’s and plumbing licenses. Along the way, he’s built lasting friendships and mentorships that continue to support his journey.

“It changed my life a lot, because now I have something to work toward,” he said. “It gives me an end goal and a career for the rest of my life, as long as I keep up with it. If it wasn’t for Goodwill, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity.”

Today, Trace is proud to be working toward a stable, fulfilling career—one that allows him to better provide for his family and build a future grounded in purpose and hard work.
