Unsure what his next career path would look like, Jesse connected with the Lexington Opportunity Center and took a leap of faith by applying for the first cohort of its Fiber Optics Training Program. The free, hands-on program gives clients the skills and experience they need to pursue employment in one of the region’s growing industries.
Jesse’s construction background gave him a strong foundation for hands-on work, and the opportunity to put those skills to use in a new industry quickly sparked his interest.
“They gave me the option for the fiber optics class,” he said. “It was awesome. I was shocked. I thought it was going to be more like a factory job.”
The three-week, employer-driven program is offered in partnership with RLC-Networks and combines classroom instruction with hands-on field experience. After completing the training, select participants have the opportunity to interview with RLC-Networks for employment.
“It was a challenging experience, but I like challenges,” Jesse said.
Today, Jesse is gainfully employed as a technician. James Dennis of RLC Networks said he has earned everything that has come his way.
“Jesse has become an amazing technician within such a short time,” he said. “He’s becoming a model technician, in my eyes. I’ve had, on countless occasions, received a phone call or text message from him asking if anyone needs any help when he’s finished with his route. He asks to come in and pick up work on his days off, and he always keeps a positive attitude, no matter how difficult the install is-that everyone at RLC loves.”
Most importantly, Jesse said he enjoys his job because it gives him flexibility to support his children. He is currently working toward owning an LLC and becoming his own boss.
“It’s a major blessing,” he said. “I can actually provide for my children now. And the flexibility helps. If I need more hours, I can do that.”
