When Mark faced financial loss, homelessness, and the challenges of starting over at age 70, he was searching for a path forward. Originally from Christian County, Kentucky, and a retired Kodak employee, Mark had spent years investing in his career and life only to face unexpected setbacks.

Goodwill Kentucky became a turning point in his journey. Through job-readiness training and other Goodwill Kentucky services, including the Goodwill Housing Program, Mark became a part-time production clerk at the Fairview Goodwill store and found a place to call home at the Goodwill Men’s House in Bowling Green.

“Goodwill has given me more than a hand up,” he said. “It has shown me that there is hope, and if you’re willing to do your part, Goodwill will do theirs. I’ve surpassed milestones I never thought possible and am on my way to an independent and successful journey.”

Mark has been with Goodwill since October 2024 and says the support network has transformed his perspective, so much so that he has written a short piece about his Goodwill journey, titled “Opportunity”:

“The feelings we enjoy from the harmony of song can oftentimes lift our spirits, put smiles on our faces, and provide a soul-cleansing potion.

Harmony is not only part of music but also a crucial necessity in living each day we are blessed with.

We can live in harmony or in disharmony with nature. Disharmony with nature creates chaos, driving us away from the spiritual aspect of living.

Spirituality is the guiding light for living on life’s terms. Yes, life’s terms. Life existed prior to becoming part of it.

Goodwill has given me the opportunity to once again live in harmony with nature, wear that smile, be thankful to all those who have given of themselves, reconnect spiritually, become a productive part of society, and sing my song in harmony.”
