In need of a second chance due to her background, Kelsey came to Goodwill looking for a fresh start. She was hired as a production clerk at our Georgetown location and has since been certified as a hanger.

She was matched with a free Goodwill career coach, Ashley, who encouraged her to take advantage of Goodwill’s Work and Learn program. Through the Work and Learn program, full-time employees work 30 hours per week in the store and spend the remaining 10 pursuing a credential, while earning wages for 40 hours. Goodwill even covers the necessary educational expenses and offers financial incentives!

Kelsey utilized the program to become certified as a medical assistant and a peer support specialist. She accepted a position at Georgetown Community Hospital and will complete her orientation next month.

“I don’t know how I am going to leave,” Kelsey said. “I have made family here, but I know Goodwill was meant to be a stepping stone. Goodwill’s mission is real. A lot of people don’t believe that, but I witness it, and I am a part of it, so it’s true.”

When asked what she is most proud of, Kelsey said, “That I can be somebody. My past doesn’t have to define me.”

At Goodwill, our mission is to put Kentuckians on career pathways, either within our organization or with community employers. We help people get a foot in the door, gain work experience and then flourish!
