While in recovery, David was encouraged by a friend in treatment to take a walk to Goodwill Kentucky’s Pikeville Opportunity Center. He was quickly introduced to Lena, his career coach, who helped him begin taking steps toward stability, education, and long-term goals.
“They went above and beyond what I was expecting from anybody,” he shared. “[Lena] knew what questions to ask, and she wasn’t shy about trying to help somebody.”
From there, David enrolled in the RISE program, a two-week job-readiness training program designed to empower individuals who have barriers to gainful employment.
“That really helped give me a firm footing for the future,” he said.
Just one month after graduating from the RISE program, David was accepted into the University of Pikeville with support from Goodwill staff. He is currently in his second semester pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
David, who was formerly unhoused, has also secured housing assistance on campus and qualified for grants and work-study opportunities to support his education. His goal is to help others, whether through ministry, social work, or another profession.
“I really believe I can be happy with whatever opportunity I’ve been given,” he said. “I want to focus on not expecting what’s best for me and be happy with whatever opportunity is given to me.”
Today, David is continuing his studies and preparing for the future while staying connected to Goodwill Kentucky. He has also been selected to represent Eastern Kentucky as a participant in Goodwill on the Hill, an annual national advocacy event where participants meet with members of Congress to support workforce development and job training programs.
“I’m really grateful that Goodwill doesn’t look down on people, is open-minded and open-hearted, and willing to help anyone and everyone who needs help. It means a lot.”
