Previously a greeter at Walmart, Charles was laid off and in search of a new employment opportunity. He was referred to the Senior Community Service & Employment Program (SCSEP), operated by Goodwill. Through SCSEP, Goodwill matches eligible individuals age 55 and older with nonprofits or public agencies for on-the-job training in a professional work environment.

Charles was assigned to our Danville store to train as a customer service representative.

While in the program, he completed many job-readiness activities, such as resume development, job interviewing skills, workplace safety, time management, communication and more.

Due to the shutdown as a result of COVID-19, Charles was placed on paid leave but returned to his training assignment in July. A month later, Goodwill decided to hire him as a permanent employee.

“I love Goodwill. I like talking to all the people. My job is important to me because I have friends here. All the people are friends I have made,” Charles explained.

A fun fact about Charles: He lives with three cats and his wife, to whom he has been married to for 44 years. When asked what the secret to a successful marriage is, he thought hard about his answer and replied, “I like her cooking!”
