Celebrate Valentine’s Day on a budget – Take Goodwill’s Date Night Challenge

KENTUCKY – Goodwill Industries of Kentucky is celebrating Valentine’s Day this year with the Goodwill® Date Night Challenge. The Date Night Challenge (inspired by real events at a Florida Goodwill) encourages shoppers to get creative and a little silly with their loved one this holiday.

“Couples are always looking for new date ideas, especially ones that won’t break the bank,” said Lennea Wooten, Director of Retail for Goodwill Industries of Kentucky. “This specific date idea has lots of perks. Couples—or even a group of friends—can spend quality time with each other, support a local nonprofit, and enter to win prizes!”

Couples will start by shopping at a local Goodwill store (Goodwill territories are a little tricky, so make sure you are shopping at participating locations!). It is suggested that couples set a budget of about $10 – $20 and use no more than that amount when choosing an outfit for their partner.

Participants are welcome to enter in one of two categories—goofy or fashionable. Contestants must then wear their Goodwill finds out in public, i.e. to dinner, the movies, bowling, at a sporting event, etc.

“We know shoppers can find really goofy items in our stores,” said Lauren Deitering, Manager of Marketing and Public Relations for Goodwill. “However, if customers visit our stores or follow us on social media, they’ll see that they are just as likely to find trendy, high-quality items as well. The beauty of Goodwill shopping is in the variety.”

Contestants must document their shopping trip and date night with photos and/or videos, and then share them on the Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram by tagging @GoodwillKY. The deadline to enter is February 25.

Three finalist couples from each of the two categories (goofy and fashionable) will be chosen by Goodwill’s local marketing department and then voted on by Goodwill Industries of Kentucky’s Facebook page followers. The couple with the greatest combination of Likes, Loves, Laughs, and Wows will win and be announced via Facebook on February 28. The winning couple from each category will receive a $50 Goodwill shopping spree.

Wooten said, “We hope this Date Night Challenge will help drive store traffic during what is a typically a slow time of year for us. Our stores are an important source of revenue for employment services for Kentucky job seekers who have disabilities or other challenges succeeding in the workforce.”
