Trevor wasn’t able to finish high school because he spent most of his time taking care of his ailing grandmother. As a result, his employment chances were limited.
After years of working in fast food, Trevor decided to try something new. He applied to Goodwill and was hired at his hometown store in Winchester. He said he found a team that not only welcomed him but also motivated him.
“I had to drop out mainly because my dad and I were taking care of his mom,” he said. “That took a lot of my time. So, the motivation to go to school wasn’t there. I found Goodwill and this amazing team, and everybody motivated me.”
Despite dropping out of high school, Trevor took pride in his self-directed education. His Career Coach, Ashley, recognized his determination and encouraged him to pursue his GED while continuing to work at the store. He received paid training hours and obtained his GED in just three months.
“Ashley has been a tremendous part of my journey,” he said. “She has given me insight into what I’m capable of. She pushed me to get (my GED). It was just the motivation I needed.”
Trevor’s GED is a stepping stone toward his goal of becoming a metalworker. Ultimately, he wants to create a better life for his 1-and-a-half-year-old son. To do that, he said he needs to “keep on cooking.”
“You’re the chef of your kitchen,” he said. “You got to make your living. I want to put more pep in my step so I can build a nice future for him.”
