Two of Goodwill Industries of Kentucky’s most impactful programs for reducing barriers to poverty and transportation, Another Way and Last Mile to Work, were featured by WDRB News in Louisville this week.
Program coordinators for Another Way pick up unhoused individuals from homeless camps and shelters and drive them to worksites for a day’s work that earns them $50, lunch and connections to Goodwill’s services and career coaching.
In the segment, program participants were profiled, like Chris, who said, “I have been homeless on and off since I was 12. More on than off. … It’s hard to get help once you are in this environment. It’s hard to get out. But I’ve always typically had a job throughout my life. That’s not a problem. Mine has been housing. A key so I can go home.”
Last Mile to Work helps working Kentuckians obtain bicycles to aid in their commutes to work. Through the program, participants – which must be referred by a Goodwill career coach – are matched with a bicycle, helmet, bike lock, safety vest, Kentucky bicycle laws and a bicycle safety brochure. Last Mile to Work partners with several local agencies to take in donated bicycles and refurbish them for use.
